Renewing using the Patent Place platform could not be simpler. After uploading your European portfolio to the platform, you will be notified of all the deadline dates for renewals. All you have to decide is when you want to renew and issue instructions, the rest is then taken care of. European Patent Renewals

What is a European patent renewal?

Renewals on patents become payable on the 4th Anniversary of when the patent was filed and then every year after that (near the anniversary due date) for up to 20 years. Renewal fees are paid for the year in advance, so you are paying the 5th year renewal fee on the 4th anniversary of the patent.

If you decide to take on the responsibility of renewing, then you bear all the responsibility for making the payment on time and for the correct amount. The risk is that if no strong system is in place to track deadlines, and a deadline is missed, it is costly and it is not always possible to apply to restore your rights.

With the supported Patent Place platform, this risk is alleviated as it is designed to track and flag all relevant renewals deadlines giving you peace of mind that your renewals are in safe hands.

To make this even simpler for instruction purposes, we have introduced a color phase system to indicate when would be the most cost-efficient time to file a formality.  The color phase system is accompanied by a reminders feature, helping you by notifying you when a specific period has been reached within the color phase. Reminder settings are based on each individual case and you have full control over when they are sent out.

Green Phase

The green phase is the earliest and most cost-effective time to renew.

The Amber phase is considerably closer to the deadline, meaning the costs are likely to be higher.

The red phase is the latest time to file before the deadline. Due to time sensitivity, these will be manually processed.
